Descriptive Writing Scaffolds - GCSE Paper 1 Question 5 Practice
This resource has been carefully crafted with the aim of enhancing students’ descriptive writing skills through the use of vivid imagery and targeted prompts. With the use of carefully selected images, it provides students with a visual stimulus to inspire their descriptive writing. Each image is accompanied by target vocabulary, encouraging students to expand their lexicon and choose words that precisely convey their intended meaning.
Learners are also prompted to incorporate a minimum of three forms of punctuation, linguistic devices and imagery (five senses) to enrich their writing and create vivid, engaging descriptions.
30 images are provided as well as one worked example. I have used this resource for years in my own classroom to help build the students confidence in creative writing. It is particularly useful for students preparing for GCSE English Language Paper 1, question 5, but can be used to help develop the creative writing skills of all students within the 11 - 15 age bracket.
As always, if you have any feedback or issues with this resource just let me know and I will be glad to help.

11+ Creative Writing
This is a 130 page book packed with everything a young learner needs to smash the 11+ creative writing section of selective entry exams. 11+ tests (and other selective entry tests, as well as GCSE English) typically require candidates either to produce a piece of descriptive writing, based on a picture or prompt, or to write a narrative. This book covers both types of writing: it contains all the key elements that the young learner needs to be able to master the 11+ creative writing component, including:
basic elements of composition (sentence construction, parts of speech)
clauses
punctuation
language devices (similes, metaphors, personification, etc.)
‘show don’t tell’
imagery
plot
setting
narrative tension
characterisation
There are also annotated exemplars, descriptive writing scaffolds, exam tips and over 30 exercises to allow learners to practise their skills. Answers are provided at the back of the book. Like my 11+ poetry books, it has been written principally with 11+, 12+ and 13+ students in mind, but the book is not limited to this cohort and will be useful to all children in the 9 – 15 age bracket who need to develop their creative writing skills.
The book is available on Amazon. I am able to sell it more cheaply here as a PDF due to not having to pay Amazon print fees.
